“Back-to-the land hippies everywhere were becoming part of a new anthropological drift. Instead of crossing from Russia to Alaska across the Bering Strait, they were jumping onto the iconic bus that Ken Kesey warned we were either on or off and migrating to remote rural America: Northern California, New Mexico, Oregon, Idaho, Washington State, Vermont and Tennessee—self -sustaining places where the land was cheap the air clean and the water clear. I was about to become one of them.”
